The Luxembourg Museum in Paris presents a new exhibition devoted to the legendary Paul Cézanne next October. Cézanne (1839-1906) is generally associated with Provence, but his work and life was not restricted to that region alone. From the time he devoted himself to painting, more than half of his time was spent in Paris and the Paris region. Indeed, he made more than twenty trips between Aix and Paris!Cézanne confronted tradition and modernity in Paris. He developed his "formulas" there before applying them in Provence. There was a contant back and forth between Provence and Ile-de-France. After 1890, critics, dealers and collectors were growing increasingly interested in his work. Cezanne acknowledged this recognition, which could only come from Paris.Thus he, more than any other artist, left his mark on modern art from the Post-Impressionists to Kandinsky. The avant-garde regarded him as a precursor - the "father of us all" in the words of Picasso.
